Managing Stress with Aromatherapy

The most powerful step to improving health is to manage stress.  Chronic stress, the kind which bombards most of us each day, has a “domino effect” that starts in our sympathetic nervous system and eventually expresses itself in our bodies with aches, pains, and disease of all kind. Our bodies react to stress as it would react to a mountain lion attack, secreting chemicals that put us on a sense of high alert or “overdrive” that is wearing on our minds and bodies. Our bodies make substances that calm us and bring us back to homeostasis after a hypersensitive state; prolonged stress depletes these substances. Essential oils act like the natural molecules our bodies make, fitting in to the receptor sites and communicating with our molecules naturally without side effects.

Managing stress means that we take time for emotional healing, rather than suppressing our emotional fears, loss, and distress.  Essential oils work on stress at all levels, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.  Essential oils provide emotional and spiritual comfort and support the release of painful or negative emotions.  The power of our negative emotions can be transformed into powerful positive energy that moves us forward. Prayer, meditation, and deep breathing all help shift ourselves emotionally. Essential oils, such as bergamot, neroli, and orange, support emotional healing powerfully, yet gently with their unique, complimentary properties.  Use these oils singly, or create your own blends.

Bergamot oil is known as “nature’s Prozac.” It is light, gentle oil with many emotional benefits.  It supports the switch from feeling “down” in a natural way.  During times of grief, it helps the heart to stay open and to heal, rather than acting like a raw sore that gets rubbed every day and doesn’t heal.  Bergamot can be used in many ways.  It is safe to use several of these applications together:

  • Put a few drops Bergamot on a cotton ball that you carry in a sandwich bag.  Inhale throughout the day.
  • Put 4-5 drops in a 1 oz. mister bottle of distilled water and spray around yourself throughout the day.
  • Use in a massage oil, either alone, or with other oils, 10 drops to 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil.

Neroli 10% comes from orange blossoms, another oil for the nervous system which naturally supports the transformation of mental and emotional tension.  It specifically helps to release deep emotional pain which causes a person to lose hope and joy.  This oil is a deeply spiritual, high frequency oil that helps to connect a person to feelings of joy when they have been in a state of hopelessness.  Additionally, Neroli 10% is a rich cosmetic oil with anti-aging properties.  Use in a bath, a mister, and in unscented, non-toxic lotions and gels.

  •  For a bath salt, mix 5 drops of Neroli 10% into a ¼ c. dead sea salt.
  • For a massage oil, mix 10 drops of Neroli 10% into 1 tablespoon grapeseed oil.
  • Neroli 10% is very synergistic with lavender. For a wonderful body wash, mix a couple drops of Neroli 10% with TRUessence Silk Face and Body Wash with Organic Lavender and apply to face and body.
  • Mix a drop of Neroli 10% with TRUessence Balance Gel for a balancing face moisturizer.
  • Diffuse 4 drops in an aromatic diffuser.
  • Make a personal mister: 4-5 drops in a 1 oz. bottle of distilled water.

Orange oil, which comes from the peel of the orange, is known as the “joy” oil.  It helps to connect us to our joyful inner child.  Whenever I think about orange, I think about my granddaughter Sarah who is a little ray of sunshine.  She always asks for orange oil when she is not feeling well.  Orange oil can be used in a bath, massage, or diffused.  Be aware that it is photosensitive, so avoid direct sunlight if you have applied orange on the skin.  Citrus oils tend to oxidize faster than other oils, therefore, it is vital that you use a top quality orange oil and keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the light.

TRUessence E-Motion Blend combines Thyme ct. thymol, Tea Tree, Juniperberry, Roman Chamomile, Bay Laurel, Lemongrass, and Jojoba as a synergistic oil to support personal and emotional empowerment.  E-Motion stands for “energy in motion” and helps transform emotional energy into confidence and positive action.  This blend helps energize you to move forward by clarifying and uplifting the mind rather than descending into negative self-talk.  It also helps to combat feelings of numbness and apathy and supports a strong sense of self and personal boundaries.

  •  Diffuse when you wake up to give a “kick start” to your morning.
  • Apply a drop on each foot.
  • Use in a personal mister: 4-5 drops in a 1 oz. bottle of distilled water.
  • Apply a drop to the solar plexus region of the body.
